Gargi Agrawal having worked for 10 years in the fashion industry based in New York and LA she made the brave decision to leave the corporate world behind and return to her more holistic roots. Having learnt sewing skills from her mother in Mumbai she returned to work with traditional Indian techniques. Thread and Loom work with leather and needlework craftsmen, all of whom are fairly paid for their work, to update traditional techniques.
The first collection is a result of these many influences an urban capsule collection that bridges ethnic vibes without becoming boho. Gargi examines. “ I hand sewed all the first proto samples in california, spent 4 months in india developing the line, picking the fabrics, working on the beading and embroidery with the india artisans, it was a labour of love and a process of rediscovering my old home through the medium of art that is closest to my heart.”
These great designs also go a long way to helping workers in India with basic human rights. All of the profits generated from Thread & Loom go towards Kranti, an NGO based in the heart of Mumbai, that works to Rescuing and Empowering girls of the red light districts of Mumbai through education. Kranti is a women’s rights NGO that provides a healing home, comprehensive education and personalised opportunities to India’s socially disadvantaged young women in order to empower and equip them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to build fulfilling futures and become agents of positive change in the world.
